Bhutanese Festivals Overview
What Are Tshechus?
In Bhutan, Tshechus are vibrant festivals deeply rooted in both spiritual and social traditions. The word Tshechu means “tenth day”—a reference to the auspicious timing based on the Bhutanese lunar calendar. These events are marked by sacred masked dances performed by monks and lay practitioners.
Adding color and humor to the festivities are Atsaras, masked jesters who keep the crowds entertained and energized while symbolically driving away negativity.
For locals, Tshechus are spiritual gatherings to receive blessings and accrue merit. For travelers, they offer an authentic experience of Bhutanese culture through vivid dances, intricate costumes, and joyful gatherings.
